Collaboratorium

While on an outdoor break the workshop attendees opened Alexander's book, A Pattern Language, and started the situated design of a place that they would love to work. The mental image of the Collaboratorium emerged nestled among the trees on the hillside. Thus was born the Hillside Group. wikipedia

Pattern language is at its best when it organizes the web of small decisions that enables a fullness of experience for people in a place. These are many and often so small as to seem unimportant. But with each omission the place weakens.

We seek fresh eyes into successful places by inviting those who have made two, a school and a company, into the realm of the other. Here we describe and name the solutions we see and feel so that a "stone soup" will grow into a healthy broth to nourish both communities.

# Method

We suggest how collaborators can stay in the moment and still mine those moments for lasting insights that inform each other and future readers for generations.

Be aware. Notice the small things that create a positive, not just the environment thus created. Name the thing in your notes. Use nouns.

Recall things. Find a quiet time to recall the things that worked. Speculate as to the problems thus solved. Favor the aspects of problems that are broadly part of the human condition.

List everything. Find the perfect name for each thing. Add this as a link to a page of things. Start chronologically but rearrange when a better order becomes obvious.

Write patterns. Click the links to make pages that you will remember and others can use. Start with one sentence that describes it all. Then explain the human roots of the problem and the details of the thing that resolves its forces. Separate these paragraphs with the word "Therefore" to strengthen their relationship as patterns.

# Community

All of these things will be of interest to other explorers in this collaboration. Some will be written over and over as they absorb wisdom of others. A few will be collected into a network of exemplars where each builds toward the next to the benefit of following generations.

Federated wiki provides specific mechanisms in support of each of these steps. They combine into a series of workflows that start from clicks and drags that make a living record in the simplest and most easily shared, owned and digitally preserved format.

We will provide step by step guides, get-started workshops and weekend support office hours. The service is free, open-source and available as a one-step install for those ready to host their own server.
